The area was originally named after
Captain Whittle and his family from Dorsetshire, England.
Upon the death of Captain Whittle, his widow and her children
decided to return to England. Hence, the remaining settlers
referred to Whittle's Bay as Whittle less Bay and eventually,
Witless Bay.
They have about 1000 people living there in approximately
400 dwellings. Whale watching and iceberg sightings are their
major attractions. Humpback and Minke whale sightings are
numerous and you can find tours to see them up close from
a boat.
